We were approached by the new Chair of a small charity supporting local communities and voluntary groups.

As well as being recently appointed as new Chair, the board composition had changed significantly over the preceding period, with a number of long-term Trustees leaving and new Trustees appointed.

In addition to these changes within the Board, the organisation had undergone rapid growth in recent years due to new project and service delivery, requiring a review of the Board’s role and assurance framework.

Working closely in consultation with the Chair, we designed and delivered a facilitated away day with the aim of both aligning the Board and the senior leadership team in areas of performance, impact and risk.

The away day started with facilitated sessions for the Board alone to discuss and build consensus across these topics, followed by a session with the Chief Executive and SLT to agree on a future roadmap for the Board to effectively carry out it’s role.

Following the away day the Chair reported that they and the board now had greater confidence in both their role and alignment on key areas with the leadership team.
